Artist Statement
There is a great beauty and thrill in viewing towns and cities from a high vantage point (for me the higher the better). The positioning of each building is a little like completing a large complicated jigsaw puzzle. There are times when it becomes overwhelming and I need a period of time away from it. Eventually the compulsion to finish the drawing returns and I can continue with fresh eyes and renewed concentration.
I also spend a lot of time observing and drawing trees and other natural forms, working from different viewpoints that I find excite me. My work is underpinned by a dependence on close, hard looking. Back in my studio I transform this into large, densely detailed charcoals. I get great satisfaction from working on a drawing whatever the subject matter. For me it's all about the power and subtlety of a line on a piece of paper.
